This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of the longest, strangest trip in rock music history, the Grateful Dead. It’s tricky for me to write down my thoughts about a band that I never even had the opportunity to see, but it’s the simple fact that their music still makes me and many other people feel something today that is evidence of the timeless nature of this band.
“If you get confused, listen to the music play”
Their lyrics captured some of the most inspiring and authentically American themes ever imagined on paper. But it is their dynamic, unpredictable set lists and free-flowing improvisational explorations that continue to remind generations of eager fans today how to appreciate the beauty beneath the chaos.
“Inspiration, move me brightly”
What made the Dead so unique was their practiced approach to musical problem solving onstage. The band became familiar with performing live within a realm of infinite possibilities; a traditionally uncomfortable place for most musicians and listeners. What happened next, was history.
In preparation for the big #Dead50 celebration this summer, I’ve curated this mix of live and studio recordings that I hope will pique the interest of new and old listeners alike.
